CD: "Headwinded" by Michael Perry and The Long Beds
Roughneck country folk performed with reverence for John Prine, Waylon Jennings, James McMurtry, and a passel of other influences including Patty Griffin and Nanci Griffith. Or, as a nice lady once said, it sounds like Gordon Lightfoot, only zippier. Michael Perry and his band the Long Beds most often appear as the second half of the bill after Perry performs material from his three books: Population:485, Truck: A Love Story, Off Main Street: Barnstormers, Prophets, and Gatemouth's Gator; and two live-humor CDs: Never Stand Behind a Sneezing Cow, I Got It From the Cows. The Long Beds are a rotating cast of musicians including Billy Krause and Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), as well as members of the Jaggernauts, the Mighty Bullfrogs, and Megafaun. The songs are about the places we're from and the people we know...backwoods cranks, roughnecks, farmers, trailer park dreamers, women who drive pickup trucks...and people who have kayak racks on their Subarus.
